Weak Animal After Calving - Feed Guidance

Updated 13 Jun 2026 • By Falah Enterprises, Authorized GOKA Feeds Distributor Anantnag

Some animals come out of calving visibly weak - low appetite, dull, slow to rise, milking far below expectation. This weakness is usually the bill for transition-period gaps, and the first 2-3 weeks after calving are your window to rebuild the animal before lasting damage is done.

Common Signs

  • Animal slow to stand or lies down excessively
  • Poor appetite after calving
  • Milk far below the animal's known potential
  • Rapid visible weight loss
  • Dull eyes and rough coat

Possible Causes

  • Negative energy balance - output exceeding intake
  • Milk fever (low calcium) around calving
  • Ketosis developing in the first weeks
  • Retained placenta or uterine infection draining the animal
  • No transition feeding before calving

What the Farmer Should Check

  • Did the placenta pass normally within 12 hours?
  • Any abnormal discharge or smell? (infection - call vet)
  • Acetone smell in breath? (ketosis - call vet)
  • Is the animal drinking and showing interest in fresh feed?
  • Temperature if measurable

Feed Guidance

First rule out medical emergencies with a veterinary doctor - milk fever, ketosis and uterine infection need treatment, not just feed. For nutritional recovery, Goka Transition +21 is specifically designed for weak, recovering animals: a high-energy, highly palatable feed given at 4-8 kg/day that fights negative energy balance. Offer fresh feed in small amounts several times a day, with clean warm water in cold weather. As strength and appetite return over 2-3 weeks, transition gradually to the appropriate milking feed.

When to Contact a Veterinary Doctor

For serious symptoms, consult a qualified veterinary doctor. Feed support can help overall nutrition and recovery but should not replace veterinary treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

My animal cannot stand after calving - what do I do?

This may be milk fever (calcium crash), which is a veterinary emergency. Call a vet immediately - treatment is fast and effective when given early.

How long does post-calving weakness last?

With correct feeding and no underlying disease, most animals regain strength within 2-3 weeks on a high-energy recovery feed.

Can I prevent this next time?

Largely yes - proper dry period feeding (Goka Dry Feed) plus Goka Transition -21 in the final 20 days dramatically reduces post-calving weakness.
