Common Signs
- Animal slow to stand or lies down excessively
- Poor appetite after calving
- Milk far below the animal's known potential
- Rapid visible weight loss
- Dull eyes and rough coat
Possible Causes
- Negative energy balance - output exceeding intake
- Milk fever (low calcium) around calving
- Ketosis developing in the first weeks
- Retained placenta or uterine infection draining the animal
- No transition feeding before calving
What the Farmer Should Check
- Did the placenta pass normally within 12 hours?
- Any abnormal discharge or smell? (infection - call vet)
- Acetone smell in breath? (ketosis - call vet)
- Is the animal drinking and showing interest in fresh feed?
- Temperature if measurable
