Poisonous Plants on Hillside Grazing — Oak, Rhododendron and More

Updated 16 Oct 2026 • By Falah Nutrition Desk, Animal Nutrition Advisor

Hungry animals on a hillside or orchard edge in spring and autumn will eat what is there, and some of what is there is poison. In the valley the common culprits are oak leaves and acorns, rhododendron, bracken fern, wilted cherry and apricot leaves, and a few garden shrubs. Knowing the plant and the picture it causes saves hours when the vet asks what she ate.

Common Signs

  • Oak (acorns, young leaves): constipation then dark bloody diarrhoea, no appetite, swollen belly, kidney failure over days
  • Rhododendron: drooling, vomiting-like regurgitation, bloat, staggering, often in goats and sheep
  • Bracken fern: cattle bleeding from nose and gums, high fever, weakness after weeks of eating it
  • Wilted cherry, peach or apricot leaves: sudden gasping, bright red gums, collapse within an hour
  • General: sudden illness in several animals after grazing a new area

Possible Causes

  • Short, overgrazed pasture in early spring or late autumn pushing animals onto shrubs and leaves
  • Orchard prunings and storm-fallen branches left where animals reach them
  • Mast years when acorns carpet the ground under oaks
  • Animals new to an area not knowing the local plants
  • Hunger — a well-fed animal browses poison much less

What the Farmer Should Check

  • What area was grazed in the last day, and what shrubs or trees grow there?
  • Are fallen branches or prunings of fruit trees within reach?
  • How many animals are affected and how fast did it start?
  • Gums: pale, bright red, or bleeding?
  • Was supplementary feed given before grazing, or were they turned out hungry?

Feed Guidance

The best prevention is a full rumen before the hillside: animals turned out after a feed of dry fodder and their measured compound feed browse far less. Keep a routine ration — GOKA Star or GOKA Smile for milking cows, GOKA Premium Goat & Sheep Feed for the flock — rather than relying on whatever grazing offers. Remove prunings and fallen fruit-tree branches the same day; the wilted leaves are more dangerous than fresh ones. In acorn years keep cattle off oak ground. If poisoning is suspected, remove all animals from the area, offer water and good hay, and call the vet with the plant name or a sample in hand.

When to Contact a Veterinary Doctor

Suspected plant poisoning is an emergency. Call a veterinary doctor immediately and show the plant; some poisonings (cherry leaf, rhododendron) kill within an hour and have specific treatments only the vet carries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are a few acorns dangerous?

A handful is usually tolerated by a well-fed cow; a belly full of acorns or young oak leaves over several days causes kidney damage. Calves and hungry animals are most at risk.

Why are wilted fruit-tree leaves worse than green ones?

Wilting releases cyanide compounds in cherry, apricot and peach leaves. A branch cut or blown down and left for a day is the classic cause of sudden deaths.
