Common Signs
- Milk drops by 2 or more liters within a few days
- Animal eats less than usual or refuses feed
- Dull behaviour, animal stands separately
- Changes in milk appearance or smell
- Hard or warm udder quarter
Possible Causes
- Sudden change in feed type or quantity
- Mastitis starting in one or more quarters
- Heat stress in summer months
- Fever or other illness
- Heat (estrus) period - temporary 1-2 day drop is normal
- Poor quality or moldy feed/fodder
- Water shortage or frozen water in winter
What the Farmer Should Check
- Check the udder for heat, swelling or hardness
- Check milk for clots, watery texture or colour change
- Check body temperature if possible
- Did the feed or fodder change recently?
- Is the animal drinking normally?
- Any signs of heat (mounting, bellowing, discharge)?
