Cow Milk Production Suddenly Decreased - Causes and Feed Guidance

Updated 13 Jun 2026 • By Falah Enterprises, Authorized GOKA Feeds Distributor Anantnag

A sudden drop in milk - within a few days - almost always has a specific cause. Unlike gradual decline (which is normal in late lactation), a sudden decrease is your animal telling you something has changed. Finding the cause early protects both the animal and your income.

Common Signs

  • Milk drops by 2 or more liters within a few days
  • Animal eats less than usual or refuses feed
  • Dull behaviour, animal stands separately
  • Changes in milk appearance or smell
  • Hard or warm udder quarter

Possible Causes

  • Sudden change in feed type or quantity
  • Mastitis starting in one or more quarters
  • Heat stress in summer months
  • Fever or other illness
  • Heat (estrus) period - temporary 1-2 day drop is normal
  • Poor quality or moldy feed/fodder
  • Water shortage or frozen water in winter

What the Farmer Should Check

  • Check the udder for heat, swelling or hardness
  • Check milk for clots, watery texture or colour change
  • Check body temperature if possible
  • Did the feed or fodder change recently?
  • Is the animal drinking normally?
  • Any signs of heat (mounting, bellowing, discharge)?

Feed Guidance

Never change feed suddenly - any feed switch should happen gradually over 7-10 days. If the drop is feed-related, return to the previous feeding schedule and reintroduce changes slowly. Ensure the daily quantity follows the 1 kg per 2.5 liters rule plus 1 kg maintenance. During recovery from illness, a high-energy feed like Goka Transition +21 can support weak animals. Always keep fresh water available.

When to Contact a Veterinary Doctor

For serious symptoms, consult a qualified veterinary doctor. Feed support can help overall nutrition and recovery but should not replace veterinary treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 1-2 liter drop during heat normal?

Yes, many animals temporarily give slightly less milk during their heat period. Production usually returns to normal in 1-2 days.

Milk dropped and the udder feels hard - what should I do?

This may be early mastitis. Contact a veterinary doctor immediately - early treatment saves the quarter and the lactation.

Can sudden feed change reduce milk?

Yes. The rumen microbes need 7-10 days to adjust to a new feed. Sudden changes upset digestion and reduce milk.
