Heifer Ready for Calving - Feeding and Body Weight Guide

Updated 13 Jun 2026 • By Falah Enterprises, Authorized GOKA Feeds Distributor Anantnag

The target for a well-grown heifer is first calving at 24-27 months with a body weight of 550-600 kg. Heifers that calve at the right weight produce more milk in their first lactation and have fewer calving problems. Feeding decides whether your heifer reaches this target on time.

Common Signs

  • Heifer over 18 months but still not showing heat
  • Visibly small frame compared to age
  • Body weight far below target for age
  • Weak or thin appearance despite eating fodder

Possible Causes

  • Fodder-only feeding without compound feed
  • Low protein intake during the main growth phase (6-15 months)
  • Worm load
  • Mineral deficiency delaying puberty

What the Farmer Should Check

  • Estimate body weight with a measuring tape (heart girth method) or weighbridge
  • Is the heifer gaining roughly 500-700 gm per day?
  • Is a heifer-specific feed being given from the 6th month?
  • Is deworming up to date?

Feed Guidance

Feed Goka Heifer from the 6th month of age up to 2 months before expected calving. Quantity by body weight: 200-300 kg: 2-3 kg/day. 300-400 kg: 3-4 kg/day. 400-500 kg: 4-5 kg/day. 500-600 kg: 5-6 kg/day. Its high bypass protein supports skeletal growth and reproductive organ development, helping heifers show heat earlier and conceive sooner. Two months before calving, shift to Goka Dry Feed, then Goka Transition -21 for the final 20 days.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age should a heifer calve for the first time?

The ideal target is 24-27 months, achievable with proper heifer feeding from the 6th month of age.

What weight should my heifer be at first calving?

550-600 kg for crossbred dairy heifers. Underweight heifers face calving difficulty and produce less milk.

My 20-month heifer is not showing heat - why?

Most commonly underweight due to insufficient nutrition. Check body weight, start proper heifer feed, and consult a vet to rule out other causes.
