Spring Green Fodder Flush - Feeding Guide

Updated 13 Jun 2026 • By Falah Enterprises, Authorized GOKA Feeds Distributor Anantnag

When spring arrives in Kashmir, fields turn green almost overnight and animals finally get fresh fodder after the long winter. But the sudden flush of lush young grass brings its own problems: bloat, loose dung and falling milk fat. A few simple precautions let your animals enjoy spring grass safely.

Common Signs

  • Swollen left side of the belly after grazing (bloat - an emergency)
  • Very loose, green dung
  • Milk fat percentage falling despite more milk volume
  • Animal eats grass eagerly but ignores dry fodder

Possible Causes

  • Sudden switch from winter dry feeding to lush grass shocks the rumen
  • Young spring grass is very low in fiber and high in fast-fermenting sugars
  • Legume-rich pastures (clover) increase bloat risk
  • Fiber shortage reduces cud chewing and milk fat

What the Farmer Should Check

  • Are animals given dry fodder BEFORE going out to fresh pasture?
  • Is grazing time on lush pasture increased gradually - starting with 1-2 hours?
  • Is the left flank checked after grazing for swelling?
  • Is milk fat holding at the collection center?

Feed Guidance

Transition to spring grazing over 10-14 days. Feed dry fodder or straw first thing in the morning so animals do not gorge on wet grass with an empty stomach, then increase pasture time gradually. Keep compound feed going at the standard rule - 1 kg per 2.5 liters of milk plus 1 kg maintenance - because spring grass alone, despite looking rich, cannot support serious milk production. Feeds like Goka Smile and Goka Star help hold milk fat and SNF steady through the spring flush. If you see bloat (swollen left flank, distress), contact a veterinary doctor immediately - severe bloat kills within hours.

When to Contact a Veterinary Doctor

For serious symptoms, consult a qualified veterinary doctor. Feed support can help overall nutrition and recovery but should not replace veterinary treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my cow get loose dung on spring grass?

Young grass is very high in water and sugars and low in fiber, so it rushes through digestion. Feeding dry fodder before grazing firms things up.

Is bloat really dangerous?

Yes - severe bloat can kill an animal within hours. Swollen left flank with distress is a veterinary emergency. Prevention: dry fodder before grazing, gradual pasture introduction.

Milk volume went up in spring but fat went down - why?

Classic spring flush effect: more watery, low-fiber feed means more volume but less fat. Restore fiber with dry fodder and keep the compound feed going.
