Iodine Deficiency — Swollen Necks in Newborn Kids and Calves
Updated 20 Oct 2026 • By Falah Nutrition Desk, Animal Nutrition Advisor
Common Signs
- Swelling on either side of the throat in newborn kids, lambs or calves
- Young born weak, hairless or with sparse hair, slow to stand and suckle
- Stillbirths or death within hours
- Pregnancy going past the due date
- In adults: dull coat, lethargy, poor fertility, sometimes a visible neck swelling
- Cluster of cases in the same season on the same farm
Possible Causes
- Low-iodine soil and water in hilly areas, so home-grown fodder is low too
- Plain (non-iodised) salt or no salt fed to animals
- No mineral mixture in late pregnancy
- Some fodders (brassicas like mustard and turnip in large amounts, soybean) interfering with iodine use
- Heavy snowfall winters with a long diet of local straw only
What the Farmer Should Check
- Is the salt fed to animals iodised, and is it fed every day?
- Is mineral mixture given to pregnant animals through the last two months?
- Are large amounts of mustard, turnip or cabbage leaves being fed to pregnant goats?
- Any swelling at the throat of newborns this season?
- Has the vet seen the dead or weak young to confirm?

When to Contact a Veterinary Doctor
Weak newborns with throat swelling need a veterinary doctor the same day. The vet can treat the surviving young and advise on iodine for the pregnant animals, and will rule out infections that also cause weak births.
