Difference Between Calf Starter, Heifer Feed and Dairy Feed

Many farmers use one feed for every animal on the farm - and lose money doing it. A calf, a growing heifer and a milking cow have completely different nutritional jobs: building a rumen, building a body, and producing milk. Each needs a feed designed for its job.
Common Signs
- Using the same feed bag for calves, heifers and milkers
- Calves growing slowly despite being fed concentrate
- Heifers fattening instead of growing frame
- Milking animals not reaching potential
Possible Causes
- One-feed-for-all uses a milking ration that is wrong for young stock: too much calcium and energy for heifers, wrong protein profile for calves
- Milking feed given to calves cannot build the rumen the way starter formulations do
What the Farmer Should Check
- What is each animal's stage: calf (0-5 months), heifer (6 months to calving), dry/transition, or milking?
- Is each group getting its stage-specific feed?
- Are feeding quantities matched to each stage's rule?
