Copper Deficiency — The Faded Coat and Spectacled Eyes

A black cow whose coat has turned a dull rusty brown, with pale hair in a ring around each eye like spectacles, is showing you a copper shortage before any other sign appears. Copper deficiency is slow, common on fodder-only diets, and behind many cases of poor growth, diarrhoea and animals that will not conceive.

- Black or dark coats fading to brown or grey, especially around the eyes and on the flanks
- Rough, dry, staring coat that does not shed properly
- Persistent mild diarrhoea with no infection found
- Poor growth in young stock despite enough feed
- Anaemia: pale gums, weakness
- Delayed heat and poor conception
- Swollen joints and stiff gait in calves

- High molybdenum or sulphur in some soils and water blocking copper uptake
- No mineral mixture, or a cheap one with little usable copper
- Heavy worm burdens worsening the shortage
- Fast-growing or high-yielding animals with higher needs

- Is a proper mineral mixture fed daily at the right quantity?
- Diarrhoea with worms ruled out by a dung test?
- Ask the vet whether a blood or liver copper test is worthwhile for the herd

Copper is not in straw and not reliably in green fodder, so it must be fed deliberately. A measured compound feed with its own mineral premix, plus a daily mineral mixture, covers the normal need: GOKA Star or GOKA Challenger 8000 for milking cows, GOKA Heifer for growing stock. Give the mineral mixture separately in the trough every day rather than relying on a lick that some animals never touch. Do not add copper salts yourself — the gap between enough and poisonous is small, and sheep in particular are easily killed by excess copper. Expect the coat to recover over two to three months once the shortage is corrected.

Diarrhoea, anaemia and poor growth have many causes; let a veterinary doctor confirm copper deficiency by testing before any copper injection or supplement. Copper is toxic in excess, especially to sheep.
