Heifer Rearing Timeline — Birth to First Calving in 27 Months

A heifer calf born today should be a milking cow in a little over two years. On most small farms she takes three and a half, because nobody planned her growth; she was fed what was left after the cows. Every extra month is feed with no return. Here is the timeline that works.

Day 1 to week 1

Colostrum within two hours, then two to three litres twice a day for the first days. Navel dipped, calf dry and out of draughts. This week decides whether she survives the first month.

Week 1 to month 3 — the starter phase

Milk at about a tenth of body weight daily, split into two or three feeds, and GOKA Calf Starter in front of her from day four with clean water. She will nibble, then eat; by six to eight weeks she should be eating a kilo or more of starter a day, which is the signal that her rumen is ready and milk can be reduced. Wean gradually when she is eating 1-1.5 kg of starter steadily, usually around 10-12 weeks.

Month 3 to month 6

Starter continues at 1.5-2 kg with good soft hay or chopped green; no coarse straw yet. Target: roughly doubling her birth weight by three months and reaching 100-120 kg by six.

Month 6 to breeding — the growth phase

Switch to GOKA Heifer at the calculated quantity for her weight, with hay or green and daily mineral mixture. The aim is steady growth of around half to three-quarters of a kilo a day — not fat, which damages the developing udder, but frame and depth. Deworm on the vet's schedule, vaccinate, trim feet. She should reach about 60% of adult weight — roughly 250-280 kg for a crossbred — by 14-16 months.

Breeding at 15-18 months

Breed on weight and a clear standing heat, not on the calendar. A heifer bred too small calves hard and milks poorly for life.

Pregnancy to calving

Continue GOKA Heifer through pregnancy so she keeps growing, then GOKA Transition −21 for the last three weeks and GOKA Transition +21 after calving. Calve her at 24-27 months at around 85% of adult weight.

The arithmetic

A heifer calving at 26 months instead of 40 has saved fourteen months of feed and labour and produced a lactation's worth of milk in the time the other was still growing. The feed that got her there was the cheapest feed on the farm.
