Chaffing Fodder — Why Cutting It Right Saves Feed and Feeds Better

Walk past two sheds at feeding time. In one, cows pull long stalks from the trough, chew the soft tops, and trample the rest into the dung channel. In the other, the same fodder has been chaffed into short pieces — and the trough is licked clean. Same fodder, very different outcomes.
What chaffing changes
Less wastage. With long fodder, animals select the tasty parts and waste the stemmy rest — often a meaningful share of what you paid for. Chaffed fodder can't be sorted; the animal eats the whole plant, stems included.
Better intake. Short pieces are easier to grab and chew, so animals — especially older ones with worn teeth — simply eat more in the same time. For a milking cow whose stomach capacity is the limit, that extra intake is extra milk.
Better mixing. Chaffed fodder mixes properly with compound feed, so a clever cow can't nose out the tasty dana and leave the fibre. Every mouthful becomes balanced.
The right length
Aim for pieces roughly 2–5 cm — around two to three fingers wide. That's short enough to stop sorting and wastage, but long enough that the fibre still makes the animal chew and produce saliva.
Don't cut too fine. Powder-fine chopping defeats the purpose of fibre: the animal swallows without proper chewing, saliva drops, and the rumen runs more acidic. If dung across the herd turns consistently loose after switching to very finely chopped fodder, the cut is too short.
Dry fodder benefits even more
Chaffing straw and hay makes the biggest difference of all — long dry straw is the most-wasted feed in most sheds. Chaffed straw can also be lightly moistened and mixed with a little compound feed, turning a boring feed into one animals actually finish.
The economics
A hand or power chaff cutter is a one-time cost; wasted fodder is a cost every single day, all winter. For most families keeping two or more animals, the machine quietly pays for itself in saved fodder within a season or two — and the animals milk better on top.
Small blade, big difference.
